Watersports on the River Fal
As the weather becomes beautiful during Spring, we are inspired to take to the creek for a spot of ‘messing about in boats’. We know that this is why many of you come to our holiday cottages in Cornwall too, and we’re pleased to share our recommendations for places to hire boats or book waterskiing and wakeboarding near Falmouth
Boat Hire
Whether you’re looking for a small self-drive day boat, a luxury yacht charter, or a sailing dinghy for the afternoon, there are plenty of options in and around the local area.
In Mylor itself, Mylor Boat Hire offers easy-to-drive motorboats, eco launches, traditional sailing boats such as the Cornish Shrimper, and larger yachts available for charter. No licence is required to hire most of their boats, and a full safety briefing is provided before you leave the harbour. Sailing yachts require an RYA Day Skipper qualification, and Cornish Shrimper sailing boats require sailing ability at RYA Level 2 standard or above, not a licence. Falmouth Boat Hire rents small, easy to drive craft from Custom House Quay in central Falmouth. They are open from April through to October day in day out (weather permitting) and hire times span from just 1 hour right up to 8 hours for full day adventure!
For a luxury experience, Sowenna Charter rent out their 42ft Princess Fly Bridge Motor Yacht for approximately £600 per half day or £1200 for a whole day. They tailor trips to private events such as weddings and special occasions, with options to go as far as Fowey if the conditions are right. Book with them well in advance for a bespoke experience.
Wakeboarding, Waterskiing and Kneeboarding!
We’re excited to tell you about a reasonably new business right here in Falmouth, offering wakeboarding and waterskiing right from the centre of town! Based at the Haven Marina (very close to Trago, the Chain Locker and Harbour Lights) this company offers riding for all levels.
Wake & Ski Falmouth provides all the equipment you need, and caters for groups of up to 6 people. They also require a minimum of two (or you can hire a ‘spotter’) so that there is someone watching you behind the boat whilst the driver is driving! Prices start at £45 and range up to bespoke overnight camping trips arranged upon request for £650 per person. A 4-day course for multiple participants including a 20-minute session per person each day can also be arranged for £150 per person.

Paddleboard Hire
Close to our cottages we have two wonderful local businesses, Mylor Boat Hire and Loe Beach Watersports, which both rent out a wide range of paddleboarding and kayaking equipment and boats, as well as offering tuition and guided tours. Find out more about these here.
If you’re in Falmouth itself, each of the beaches have their own paddleboard hire so you really are spoilt for choice! Just check before going that each centre is open on the day and has availability for your paddling plans. You can also hire from Koru at the Budock Vean Hotel to explore the Helford River, or inland, Stithians Lake also has kayak and paddleboard hire along with windsurfing, winging and e-foiling!
Many of our cottages also have direct water access, and others have ample storage for boats, paddleboards or kayaks if you have your own to bring along. Take a look at Curlew, The Wheel House, Beach Cottage, Weir Orchrad, Weir Cottage, Hooper’s Hill, Polyn or Pondhu.
