Spring Wildflowers on the Cornish Coast Path
We have such a spectacular choice of coast paths in the Falmouth area, many of which you can walk directly to from our holiday cottages in Mylor and Flushing. As the long-awaited sunshine returns this Spring, here are some of the quintessential flora you can look out for in March, April and May…
Primroses
One of the earliest flowers to grace us with its presence in the Spring, we get many yellow, white and purpley-pink varieties of primrose in Cornwall. Did you know that they are also edible and therefore popular to collect (where they are plentiful) and add to cakes and salads? (Just make sure you are 100% sure what you are collecting before eating any foraged goods!)
Red Campion
This bright and brilliant Spring flower is actually more pink than red… It’s so distinctive amongst the green foliage and a lot of whiter wildflowers that line the footpaths at this time of year. Bees and butterflies love it too, so you’ll really get a feeling on the coast paths coming to life!
Daffodils
With a mixture of wild species and those thrown into hedgerows from crop fields, you are sure to see an abundance of yellow in Cornwall during March (and even earlier!) You do see some along the coast paths, but perhaps more visible are those along the country lanes and in the villages on grass verges. Picking the daffodils might be slightly more frowned upon than some of the other wildflowers in our list, unless they are from an area that has hundreds! Many of the local markets and village shops also sell bounces for £1 or so. They are lovely on the windowsills and tables of our holiday cottages!
Wild Garlic
Arriving in shaded woods during the springtime, you might smell this flower before you can see it! With luscious green leaves and white, star-shaped flowers, you can often see carpets of the popular foraging ingredients reaching along the sides of many of the woodland paths which connect the coast path to roads and car parks.
Sea Thrift
A small, rounded pink flower that grows well on exposed rocky cliffs, this can be a typical image of the Cornish coastline! You’ll often find them amongst short grass, and they are perhaps more common on the wilder North coast of Cornwall than near Falmouth, but keep your eyes peeled as you never know!
Bluebells
Later in the Spring, we are lucky to have some stunning bluebells in the woods and along the open fields. Keep a look out for both native and Spanish varieties in amongst the wild garlic and three-corner leek.
Further Afield
If you fancy a day out to the Lizard Peninsula, which is about 45 minutes drive from most of our cottages, then an even more impressive variety of flora and fauna is on offer. It’s a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and is home to some unique habitats and ecosystems for both plants, birds, invertebrates and marine mammals. Wildflowers found here include Twin-headed Clover (only found here), Wild Asparagus, Fringed Rupturewort, and Yellow Centaury.
Cultivated Gardens
Closer to home, we love the footpaths around Mylor and Flushing, and the nearby Enys Gardens are famous for their bluebell field. To catch some more cultivated species of Spring flowers, don’t forget about the selection of gardens to visit in the Falmouth area – they are at their most impressive at the beginning of the season, we think!
Magnolia trees and collections of camellias and rhododendrons mean that there’s a lot more colour than you might expect at this time of year. Our warmer climate here in the South West means that flowering happens much earlier than the rest of the country, and several species which struggle with frost damage manage to thrive here in the milder conditions.
Whilst we have had a lot of rain to start 2026, the wildflowers have not been discouraged! However, we do recommend bringing your wellies as many of the coast paths and rural footpaths are muddier than usual this year. Fingers crossed they will be drying out soon, and we have a warm and sunny spring to come.
