Cornish Chocolate Brands to Sample This Summer!

We think that part of going on holiday is about discovering new things, and this is certainly the case when it comes to food and drink in Cornwall! Whilst you may think of seafood and pasties being popular here in the South West (which of course they are), you may not yet have explored the finest confectionary the region has to offer…

Whether it’s a delicious treat to enjoy during your self-catering stay with us, or something to take home as a gift or souvenir, these chocolate makers based in Cornwall should definitely be on your radar:

Chocolarder

One of just a handful of ‘bean-to-bar’ chocolate makers in the UK, and the only one in Cornwall. Chocolarder are based in Falmouth with a factory on the outskirts of town, and a newly opened shop on centrally located Arwenack Street for Summer 2025.

You can take a tour (pre-booked online) of the factory to follow the journey and making process from bean-to-bar, and visit the roastery afterwards for a delicious tasting experience. Some of their more unusual flavours include Croissant and Coffee, Rosemary and Sea Salt, Roasted Chestnut and Cornish Honeycombe. They also make excellent Caramel Sea Salt Truffles and luxury Drinking Chocolate!

‘Again’ is their brand new range of chocolate bars made using surplus ingredients that otherwise would have gone to waste. They say ‘we couldn’t be prouder to be launching this circular economy chocolate.’ The idea came in 2021 with their orange peel bar, taking wasted orange peel from a local beach café. It worked so well that the idea stuck!

Food of The Gods

Based in far West Cornwall, Food of the Gods founder Dal makes the chocolate in small batches by hand in his kitchen, using only the best raw organic and fairtrade ingredients available, with 85% cocoa and 15% natural fruit sugar.

He says “I wanted to make raw chocolate after working for the NHS in mental health. We wanted to show our clients how to make a chocolate that would retain all of the health benefits of cocoa, without the ‘junk’ added to it.”

The ‘Raw chocolate’ he talks about is made from cocoa beans that are unroasted, thereby retaining many of the nutrients that are often lost in the heat process. This is something you rarely find with bigger, mass-produced brands.

Cacao has been used for thousands of years in Central and  South America for its energising and health benefits. Dal is bringing some of this tradition to his chocolate-making process here in Cornwall, and you can browse the range of bars he makes online. They are all vegan, except the ‘Honey and Bee Pollen Chocolate’.

Josh’s Chocolate

Founder Josh grew up on a farm in Cornwall, playing out in the fresh air whilst his parents made Cornish ice cream. He says “it was this addition to our dairy-farm that ignited my sweet-tooth, something that has stayed with me.”

The Josh’s Chocolate factory today is made out of four shipping containers on his family home at Callestick Farm.

Working with talented St Ives illustrator Joanne Barry, they created a series of gorgeous packaging illustrations depicting the idyllic outdoor and Cornish lifestyle. Look out for their trademark ‘giant chocolate buttons’ as well as beautiful bars and hot chocolate spoons! Each flavour has its own name; ‘Barefoot on the Beach, ‘Starlit Soiree’, ‘Friends by The Fire’ and “Ramble in the Woods’ to name just a few…

Trenance Chocolate

Based at ‘The Chocolate Factory and Craft Centre’ in Mullion, Trenance Chocolate use high quality Belgian chocolate to create specialist shaped confectionery, including a signature Cornish Pasty chocolate, complete with crimped crust!

Unlike many confectionary companies, you can actually visit Trenance and see the chocolate being made. Pauline and Martin Raftery created the factory and cafe destination when they took over the site in 2001. Their son Jonathan trained as a chocolatier and has run the Chocolate Factory since!

They are joined by several small craft shops and an art gallery, open daily from 10am – 5pm. There are also lots of beautiful walks in the Mullion area, so it’s well worth a visit to this part of the Lizard Peninsula (about 40 minutes drive from Falmouth).

Rio Nuevo

Based locally in Penryn, the couple behind the chocolate company Rio Nuevo combine their Latin American roots with their love of Cornwall. They have a strong ethical promise at the forefront of their brand – sourcing cacao beans directly from small scale farmers in Ecuador and paying them a fair price.

They say: “We chose to work directly with cacao farmers, and shorten the supply chain so that the chocolate you buy can really make a difference in their lives. Building relationships is at the core of our business, and our farmers are at the heart of what we do. Having direct trade relationships with our cacao farmers is the basis and main component of our success.”

Their delicious range includes drinking chocolate, flavoured dark chocolate bars, and high-end couverture chocolate for chefs and bakers. They supply many local and London cafes with their luxury hot chocolate too, including Situ Cafe in Penryn and the Cornish Bakeries franchise.

Recently they have also been collaborating with talented chefs to create bespoke deserts, which you can see more of on their Instagram

Kernow Chocolate

From their chocolate factory in St Eval (near Padstow) the small family team at  Kernow Chocolate have developed over 20 flavours, ranging from classics to the weird and wonderful (‘Toasted Teacake’ and ‘Chilli and Lime’!!)

Their novelty chocolate gifts include ‘Dark Chocolate Shot Cups’ ready to be filled with your favourite tipple and then devoured afterwards… perfect for a zero waste party we think!

The packaging of Kernow Chocolate bars are particularly eye catching because of their photographic and illustrated designs. Keep an eye out for them in many local shops or seasonal markets.

We hope you love every morsel of chocolate you try whilst you’re here, and why not compliment your souvenir shopping with Best Local Cornish Gins?
