Flushing Regatta Week

Flushing Regatta Week

Each July the quaint town of Flushing is brought to life with the Flushing Village Regatta Week. The eight-day event brings out the festival spirit for both the locals and its welcomed visitors. The village shop and pubs are adorned with Regatta decorations and bunting creating the ultimate summer atmosphere.

Each year the schedule changes, but below is roughly the events that will be taking place.

Flushing From Above

The week boasts a variety of shoreside and water activities; starting on Saturday with live music at the Bowling Green from 6 pm. On the following day (Sunday) the activities continue at the Bowling Green with snail racing, a BBQ and a Fun Dog Show from 1.30 pm. We highly recommend the Dog Show not only for its cuteness (and sometimes hilarity, especially in the Musical Sits category) but also for its opportunity to win one of the three rosettes or even the best in the show. Following a weekend of activities,

Monday invites you to take part in one of the most popular events of the week; Crab Catching! If you want to catch your own crabby critters, ensure to bring enough bait, crabbing lines and a secure bucket (no nets please!). Also on this Monday is the Betty Stogs Raft Race with the course running between the Ferry Quay and the Sailing Club Quay. Continuing Flushing’s pledge (along with ours) to become more sustainable, the Rafts this year must not be built with any single-use plastics; keeping our waters clean and safe for the fish! Whether taking part or simply watching, it is always fun to watch the handmade, machine-free rafts attempting their journeys across the water.

Tuesday welcomes the Reggatta Street Market starting at 5 pm. Coventry Road will be jammed packed with stalls ranging from tasty treats to fun charity stalls, definitely worth a rummage! For the kids, the market day will also provide some entertainment in the form of an inclusive art competition, with the theme of ‘Sock Puppets’ for the under 11s and ‘Shell Art’ for the 11+. The day will be concluded with Nankersey Choir from 7.30 pm at the Village Club, a free concert (although donations are always welcome) and this year will feature a special guest vocalist – Becky Furse.

Wednesday hosts the notorious Seven Stars Pub Quiz from 8 pm and Thursday hosts a Flushing Sports day, with both kids races and an adult mini-marathon.

Friday follows the competitive theme with sandcastle competitions, a tug of war and the fastest bathtub race (?!).

Saturday is packed full of activities. The day starts with the Trawler Race at 9 am; boats are dressed up brightly coloured bunting and flags and has strict criteria that go beyond whose boat is the fastest. At 12 pm the Swimming Gala starts, with races for 7+ and trophies to be won. Pram Dinghy Races take place at 1.30 pm, an event guaranteed to get you wet but also one not to be missed. Flushing’s Grand Carnival Procession ends this Saturday’s festivities with an opportunity to wear your fancy dress and silly clothes with yet more prizes to be won. The Flushing Village Regatta Weekends on Sunday with a Mystery Boat Trip! Tickets are £2.50 for children, £5 for adults and £14 for families of four. This boat trip is always a fun day out!
